EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Charles E. Brown, depicts a De Havilland Sea Hornet F.20 (VZ708) of 801 Squadron in flight from the flight deck of HMS Implacable during March 1950. The post-war era of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fleet Air Arm saw the Sea Hornet as a formidable carrier-borne fighter, providing essential air defense for the British navy. The Sea Hornet F.20 was an evolution of the Sea Hornet F.1, featuring improved performance and armament, including four 20mm cannons and up to 2,000 pounds of bombs or rockets. The aircraft's distinctive shape, with its large wing and tail surfaces, was designed to provide excellent stability and maneuverability in the demanding maritime environment. The Sea Hornet F.20 was operated by 801 Squadron, one of the most distinguished units of the Fleet Air Arm. The squadron had a proud history, having been formed in 1937 and seeing action in both World War II and the Korean War. The Sea Hornet allowed the squadron to continue its tradition of excellence, providing vital protection for the Royal Navy's carriers and their convoys. The photograph captures the Sea Hornet in its element, taking off from the flight deck of HMS Implacable. The ship's flight deck crew can be seen in the background, working diligently to ensure the safe launch of the aircraft. The Sea Hornet's powerful engines create a plume of smoke as it gains altitude, leaving the carrier behind. The image is a testament to the close partnership between the RAF and the Royal Navy, and the crucial role that the Fleet Air Arm played in defending Britain's maritime interests in the post-war era.
