EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Bulwark (R06), a majestic postwar aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, graces this photograph taken by Charles E. Brown of the Royal Air Force Museum in August 1957. The image encapsulates the essence of maritime power and aviation innovation, as the carrier proudly displays her distinctive angled flight deck, ready to launch and recover aircraft. Commissioned in 1955, HMS Bulwark was the first of the Centaur-class carriers, designed to provide a platform for the growing number of jet-powered aircraft in the Royal Navy's inventory. With a displacement of over 18,000 tons and a length of 612 feet, she was a formidable presence on the high seas. The photograph captures the HMS Bulwark in her prime, with a complement of Sea Hawk and Seahawk jet fighters, as well as helicopters, lined up on the flight deck. The crew, dressed in their distinctive blue overalls, can be seen preparing the aircraft for takeoff or recovery. The image also reveals the carrier's impressive array of weaponry, including anti-aircraft guns and missile launchers, which provided protection against aerial threats. The HMS Bulwark played a significant role in the Royal Navy's postwar fleet, participating in numerous exercises and deployments around the world. This photograph serves as a testament to the carrier's power, versatility, and the dedication of her crew. It is a poignant reminder of a bygone era in naval history, when the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers were the epitome of British maritime might.
