A Concert Party, Artist Unknown

Oil on board, Dutch / Flemish School, 17th century. The painting was previously known as Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester at Kenilworth and attributed to Dirk Hals (1591-1656). Hals was the brother of the more famous 17th century painter Frans Hals. He studied in Haarlem under Abraham Bloemart, and his works often depict scenes of dancing and music-making. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, was one of Queen Elizabeths favourites. She bestowed on him his title and gifted him Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire as a mark of her affection. The event, which the painting was originally believed to depict, occurred in 1575, when the Earl of Leicester, entertained the Queen at Kenilworth. There were three weeks of revelry and banquets and the visit was much talked about at the time. Following research undertaken in 2004, doubt was cast on the paintings original attribution due to uncertainty why a Dutch painter should choose this event for a subject at least 40 years after it occurred

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art titled "A Concert Party" created by an unknown artist from the Dutch/Flemish School in the 17th century. Originally believed to be attributed to Dirk Hals, brother of renowned painter Frans Hals, this oil on board painting was previously known as "Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester at Kenilworth". The artwork beautifully captures a scene filled with music and merriment, which is characteristic of many works by Dirk Hals. The depicted event took place in 1575 when Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, hosted Queen Elizabeth at Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire. This grand occasion lasted for three weeks and included extravagant banquets and festivities that became widely talked about during that time. However, research conducted in 2004 raised doubts about the original attribution of this painting. It questioned why a Dutch painter would choose to depict an event that occurred over four decades prior. Despite these uncertainties surrounding its origin, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its vibrant depiction of joyous celebration. As we admire this print from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, we are transported back in time to witness the splendor and revelry enjoyed by Queen Elizabeth and her favorite courtier at historic Kenilworth Castle.
