Ruins in the East, Prosper Marilhat (1811-1847)
Oil on canvas, French School, 19th century. Oil on canvas, French School, 19th century. Born in Auvergne, central France in 1811, Prosper Marilhat was encouraged to paint from an early age, joining the studio of the French Romantic painter, Camille Roqueplan, in 1829. When he was twenty, after one of his paintings was shown at the Paris Salon of 1831, Marilhat was invited by the diplomat and botanist, Charles von Hugel, to join one of his expedition to the Middle East. As a result, Marilhat spent two years in Egypt, where he took numerous notes and sketches, building his reputation as an orientalist painter. Orientalism, is a term used to describe the 19th century romanticism of the East through painting, poetry and literature. The subject of this painting, Ruins in the East, is typical of the orientalist fantasy and nostalgia that often take the form of ruins. Marilhats short career focussed on painting Islamic architecture, landscapes and portraits. In modern times, orientalism is seen more critically. In his book, Orientalism, published in 1978, the writer and critic Edward Said denounced orientalist expressions in Western art as demeaning and colonialist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Ruins in the East" by Prosper Marilhat, an influential French painter of the 19th century. Born in Auvergne, France in 1811, Marilhat displayed a passion for art from a young age and honed his skills under the guidance of renowned Romantic painter Camille Roqueplan. At just twenty years old, Marilhat's talent was recognized when one of his paintings was exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1831. This achievement led to an incredible opportunity as he was invited by diplomat and botanist Charles von Hugel to join an expedition to the Middle East. Spending two years immersed in Egypt, Marilhat meticulously documented his experiences through sketches and notes which greatly contributed to his reputation as an orientalist painter. "Ruins in the East" exemplifies orientalism - a movement that romanticized Eastern culture through various artistic forms such as painting, poetry, and literature during the 19th century. The painting portrays typical orientalist fantasy and nostalgia often depicted through ruins. Throughout his short but impactful career, Marilhat focused on Islamic architecture, landscapes, and portraits. It is important to note that modern interpretations of orientalism have become more critical over time. In Edward Said's influential book "Orientalism" published in 1978, he denounced Western art expressions rooted in orientalism as demeaning and colonialist. This remarkable print serves not only as a visual delight but also prompts reflection on how historical artistic movements can be reevaluated with changing perspectives.
