The Tea Table, Harold Harvey (1874-1941)

Oil painting on canvas, Newlyn School, 1920. The painting shows a mealtime scene around the kitchen table. A traditional Cornish range is pictured in the background. Harold Harvey was one of the few successful artists of the period who was born and raised in Cornwall. He grew up surrounded by the industry he would later paint and counted many of the working people he depicted as friends. He originally studied under Norman Garstin, but also visited Paris as a young man where he was greatly influenced by the Post-Impressionist movement. His earlier work was very much influenced by Stanhope Forbes, though it changed as he grew older, his brushwork becoming less thick and his forms more simple. Some of his later work shows a period stylisation but without the Picasso influences of his contemporaries Ernest and Dod Procter. Harvey continued to work right up to his death in 1941. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases Harold Harvey's masterpiece, "The Tea Table" a remarkable oil painting that captures a heartwarming mealtime scene around a rustic kitchen table. Painted in 1920 as part of the renowned Newlyn School movement, this artwork beautifully depicts the essence of Cornish life during that era. In the background, an authentic Cornish range adds authenticity to the setting while showcasing Harvey's attention to detail. Born and raised in Cornwall himself, Harvey had an intimate understanding of the local industry and counted many working individuals depicted in his paintings as personal friends. Initially influenced by Norman Garstin and later inspired by Post-Impressionism after visiting Paris, Harvey's artistic style evolved over time. His earlier works reflected Stanhope Forbes' influence but gradually transformed into simpler forms with lighter brushwork as he matured. Unlike his contemporaries Ernest and Dod Procter who embraced Picasso influences, Harvey developed his own unique period stylization without straying too far from traditional aesthetics. Despite facing challenges throughout his career, Harold Harvey remained dedicated to his craft until his passing in 1941. This extraordinary piece serves as a testament to both his talent and unwavering passion for capturing everyday moments on canvas. Displayed within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, this print allows viewers to appreciate the rich colors - reds, whites, blues - alongside earthy tones such as brown and black. The inclusion of yellow flowers adds a touch of vibrancy amidst the serene atmosphere portrayed in this timeless artwork.
