The names of the women are thought to be as follows: left to right, Ms. Dorothy Phyllis Martin (partly obscured by mans cap), Ms. Brown (to the rear of the group), Ms. Northey, Ms. Crowther, Ms. Nora Lock, Ms. Vera Dunfrane. Alfred Martin, owner of Tregavethan Farm, a Womens Land Army training centre, sits to the left of the picture with a bowl partially hiding his face, and his wife sits with her back to the hay rick on the extreme right of the picture. EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in the summer of 1917 at Tregavethan Farm, Truro, Cornwall, this poignant print showcases the remarkable women who served in the First World War Women's Land Army. In a field during croust-time (lunchtime), six members of the Land Army and several farm hands gather for a moment of respite amidst their vital agricultural work. Although some faces are partially obscured, we believe these brave women to be Ms. Dorothy Phyllis Martin (partly hidden by a man's cap), Ms. Brown (standing towards the rear), Ms. Northey, Ms. Crowther, Ms. Nora Lock, and Ms. Vera Dunfrane. Seated on the left is Alfred Martin, owner of Tregavethan Farm and also serving as a training center for the Women's Land Army. The women donned their distinctive uniforms consisting of boots, gaiters, felt hats, and pale fabric overalls—a symbol of their dedication to supporting food production during wartime. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan—an invaluable documenter of history—the image captures not only the resilience and strength embodied by these courageous individuals but also provides us with an insight into life on Cornish farms during this tumultuous period. This particular photograph offers us a glimpse into an essential chapter in our nation's history—where ordinary men and extraordinary women came together to ensure that no one went hungry while fighting for freedom.
