EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Army of India Medal, awarded to Cornet G. I. Call for his remarkable service with the 27th Light Dragoons during the period of 1799-1826. The medal, adorned with four clasps representing significant battles such as ALLIGHUR, BATTLE of DELHI, LASWARREE, and CAPTURE OF DEIG, is a testament to Call's bravery and dedication on the battlefield. The Call family possesses an impressive collection of seventeen campaign medals spanning from the Peninsular War to the Great War. This particular medal was approved on March 21st, 1851 by the Honourable East India Company as a retrospective award for survivors who participated in various actions during this period. Designed by William Wyon, this circular silver medal features Queen Victoria's head on its obverse side with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA. On its reverse side, a winged Victory can be seen holding a laurel branch and wreath alongside the inscription THE ARMY OF INDIA 1799-1826. Notably engraved on its rim are Cornet G. I. Call's name, rank, and regiment. Displayed against a pale blue ribbon background in this exquisite print captured by Mike Searle at Royal Cornwall Museum (TRURI:1931.40.42), it serves as both a historical artifact and a symbol of honor bestowed upon those who have selflessly served their country in times of conflict.
