The white enamelled centre bears three gilt crowns and a sceptre with a rose (for England), a thistle (for Scotland) and a shamrock (for Ireland). A red enamelled ring inscribed in gilt letters TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO (three joined in one) surrounds the centre within a green enamelled and silver-gilt laurel wreath. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Order of the Bath (Military Class) from 1869, featuring George Frederick Stevenson Call who was appointed Companion of the Order in Queen Victoria's Birthday Honours that year. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, originally known as the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath, is a revered British order of chivalry established by George I on May 18th, 1725. The name "Order of the Bath" stems from its medieval origins where knights would undergo an elaborate ceremony involving bathing as a symbol of purification. This particular medal, depicted in both obverse and reverse forms within this photograph, takes shape as a silver gilt and white enamelled Maltese Cross with silver-gilt lions adorning each arm (one lion being absent). At its center lies a white enamelled section embellished with three gilt crowns and a sceptre adorned with symbols representing England, Scotland, and Ireland - namely a rose, thistle, and shamrock respectively. Encircling this central design is a red enamelled ring inscribed with golden letters reading TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO (three joined in one), all encompassed by an exquisite green enamelled laurel wreath intertwined with silver-gilt. Completing this magnificent piece is a blue enamelled ribbon below bearing the inscription ICH DIEN (I Serve), while its crimson hue adds to its regal allure. With great historical significance and artistic craftsmanship evident throughout this image captured by Mike Searle at Royal Cornwall Museum in TRURI : 1931.40.44 collection; it truly encapsulates the grandeur associated with such esteemed honors bestowed upon individuals for their service to crown and country.
