A general view of Cadgwith, Cornwall. Late 1800s
A hand coloured view over the village of Cadgwith. The slide shows what look like two medieval strip field systems on the side of the hill at the far side of the village. The five strips on the left are clearly still being cultivated at the period the photograph was taken. Whereas, the two strips above the white cottages to the right of the picture have fallen out of use and are over grown. Hand coloured slide by W.C. Hughes, Brewster House, London. EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured print takes us back to the late 1800s, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the picturesque village of Cadgwith in Cornwall. The image showcases an expansive view over the village, with its charming white cottages nestled along the rugged coastline. However, it is not just the idyllic coastal scenery that catches our attention. Upon closer examination, we notice two distinct medieval strip field systems on the side of a hill in the distance. The five well-maintained strips on the left indicate ongoing cultivation during this period, while their lush appearance hints at a thriving agricultural community. In contrast, the two strips above the white cottages on the right have fallen out of use and are now overrun by nature's reclamation. The hand-coloured slide was skillfully crafted by W. C. Hughes from Brewster House in London; however, unfortunately, we do not know who originally captured this remarkable moment through their lens. Nevertheless, this photograph transports us back to an era when Cadgwith was undoubtedly a bustling fishing village within its Victorian and Edwardian charm. As we admire this historical snapshot preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum today, let us appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and its valuable insights into Cornish history - where coastal life intertwined with agriculture against a backdrop of breathtaking natural landscapes.
