Impressive front view of Calenick House, a substantial house with a neatly manicured garden, belonging to Captain Grey at the time of this photograph. Entrance way designed in the classical style with a recumbent dog on the entrance mat and a clock tower on the left. The clock tower belonged to an important tin smelting works which operated throughout most of the 18th and 19th centuries before closing in 1891. The tin ore was brought from the local mines, and the finished ingots of white tin were shipped from Truro. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Royal Cornwall Museum takes us back to the early 1900s, showcasing the grandeur of Calenick House in Calenick, Cornwall. The impressive front view reveals a substantial house surrounded by a meticulously manicured garden, exuding elegance and charm. Belonging to Captain Grey during this period, Calenick House boasts an entrance way designed in the classical style. As we gaze at the photograph, our eyes are drawn to a recumbent dog resting on the entrance mat, adding a touch of whimsy to this stately abode. To the left stands a magnificent clock tower that once belonged to an important tin smelting works. The history behind this clock tower is fascinating; it served as an integral part of Cornwall's industrial heritage. Operating throughout much of the 18th and 19th centuries, this tin smelting works played a crucial role in processing locally mined tin ore. However, its operations came to an end in 1891. Calenick House stood witness to these bustling times when ingots of white tin were shipped from nearby Truro after being refined within these walls. This photograph captures not only architectural beauty but also serves as a window into Cornwall's rich past. We owe our gratitude for preserving such historical moments to photographer Arthur William Jordan who skillfully captured this image for us all to admire today.
