EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Clowance House in Crowan, Cornwall, circa 1907. The exterior of this grand estate stands as a testament to its rich history and resilience. Having endured two devastating fires in 1837 and 1843, Clowance House underwent extensive reconstruction and remodeling after the latter incident. This photograph was captured before February 10th, 1908, freezing a moment in time when the house stood proud amidst its picturesque surroundings. For centuries, Clowance House served as the cherished abode of the esteemed St Aubyn family from approximately 1380 until 1923. However, their primary residence shifted to St Michaels Mount since 1669 while still maintaining a connection with this ancestral home. Today, St Michaels Mount remains under their care. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Arthur William Jordan whose lens skillfully captures the essence of Clowance House's architectural beauty and historical significance. With his keen eye for detail and composition, Jordan immortalizes this iconic landmark for generations to come. This print serves as both an exquisite piece of artistry and a window into Cornwall's past. It allows us to appreciate not only the physical splendor of Clowance House but also its enduring legacy within Cornish heritage.
