Opening of new livestock unit, Churchtown Farm, Lanlivery, Cornwall. October 1987

BBC South West Spotlight weather presenter Craig Rich (centre) is shown around the new livestock unit of Churchtown Farm, Lanlivery, which he declared open. Craig joined Spotlight in 1978 and was the first regional weather presenter for the BBC. Craig retired in 2003 but still makes occasional appearances on the programme when his successor, David Braine is away. Just prior to this retirement, Craig was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the South West branch of the Royal Television Society. Churchtown Farm provided outdoor activity holidays for disabled people before closing in 2011. It was run at various times by the charities Vitalise and Scope. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from October 1987, we witness the grand opening of a new livestock unit at Churchtown Farm in Lanlivery, Cornwall. The distinguished figure at the center of attention is none other than Craig Rich, the beloved weather presenter for BBC South West Spotlight. Having joined the program in 1978 as its first regional weather presenter, Craig's presence on screen became synonymous with accurate forecasts and charming charisma. As he explores the state-of-the-art livestock unit, his genuine enthusiasm shines through. With an infectious smile on his face, Craig marvels at the impressive facilities that will undoubtedly benefit local farmers and enhance agricultural practices in Cornwall. Craig's dedication to his craft was evident throughout his career until his retirement in 2003. However, he continues to make occasional appearances on Spotlight when his successor is away. Just before bidding farewell to daily broadcasts, Craig received a well-deserved lifetime achievement award from the South West branch of the Royal Television Society—an accolade honoring decades of exceptional service. It is worth noting that Churchtown Farm played a significant role beyond agriculture; it provided outdoor activity holidays for disabled individuals until its closure in 2011 under various charitable organizations such as Vitalise and Scope. This remarkable photograph captured by Jonathan Barker immortalizes not only an important moment for Churchtown Farm but also pays tribute to one of Cornwall's most cherished television personalities—Craig Rich—the man who brought sunshine into our homes every day through rain or shine.
