EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the silver coins commemorating Lostwithiel's 800th anniversary. Captured in May 1989 by photographer Jonathan Barker, this image transports us back to a significant moment in Cornwall's past. Crafted to celebrate eight centuries since the town charter was granted, these commemorative coins hold immense cultural and historical value. Designed by the talented Phil Treleaven, they mirror the size of silver pennies that were once circulated in 1189. One side proudly displays Lostwithiel's coat of arms featuring a majestic castle surrounded by a moat and two fishes, symbolizing its rich heritage. The other side bears a cross with the inscription "1189 to 1989" encapsulating the passage of time and continuity. These exquisite coins gained even greater significance when Queen Elizabeth II herself received a pair during her visit to Lostwithiel in 1989. Their presentation marked an extraordinary honor for both the town and its inhabitants. Preserved within this print is not just an image but also a testament to Lostwithiel's enduring legacy. It serves as a reminder of how communities come together to commemorate their shared history through tangible symbols like these precious coins. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported into Lostwithiel's vibrant past, where tradition meets modernity in celebration of an incredible milestone.
