Tremough Lodge, Tremough Estate, Treliever Road, Penryn, Cornwall. Early 1900s

View showing the front entrance of Tremough Lodge on Treliever Road. There is a young girl walking near the entrance. The estate is named after the Tremough family who lived on the site from the 1300s to 1600s. Grade II listed, Tremough House was built in 1704 by John Worth, Sheriff of Cornwall. The house was also the private residence of several other families over the centuries, including John Tilly, Benjamin Sampson and William Shilson, as well as being home to the Tremough Academy for Young Gentlemen a short period. Tremough served as a convent for the Order of Les Filles de la Croix from 1943 to 1997. The estate was purchased in 1999 by the combined Universities in Cornwall group and was developed into the Penryn Campus for Falmouth University and the University of Exeter. The Lodge was added by Benjamin Sampson during the 19th century. Photographer: Probably Arthur William Jordan but possibly Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Tremough Lodge, nestled within the historic Tremough Estate in Penryn, Cornwall. The image showcases the grand front entrance of the lodge on Treliever Road, with a young girl gracefully strolling nearby. The estate derives its name from the esteemed Tremough family who resided here for several centuries, starting from the 1300s until the 1600s. A significant landmark in its own right, Grade II listed Tremough House was constructed in 1704 by John Worth, Sheriff of Cornwall. Throughout its rich history, this magnificent house has been home to various notable families including John Tilly, Benjamin Sampson, and William Shilson. Interestingly enough, at one point during its existence, Tremough House served as a prestigious academy for young gentlemen before later transforming into a convent for the Order of Les Filles de la Croix between 1943 and 1997. In more recent times, this remarkable estate found new purpose when it was acquired by the combined Universities in Cornwall group in 1999. Today it stands proudly as Penryn Campus for Falmouth University and University of Exeter. Adding to its allure is Tremough Lodge itself which was thoughtfully added by Benjamin Sampson during the nineteenth century. While there is some uncertainty regarding attribution to either Arthur William Jordan or Arthur Philp as photographer—both renowned figures—the undeniable charm captured within this photograph remains unchanged throughout time.
