A general close-up view of Goonvrea House with its gardens behind and the coach house and stables to the right. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. This print showcases the picturesque Goonvrea House in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, taken in December 1924. The image provides a general close-up view of the magnificent house with its well-manicured gardens stretching behind it. To the right, we catch a glimpse of the coach house and stables, adding to the grandeur of this estate. According to Rex Barratt's book "Stately Homes in and Around Truro". Goonvrea House is believed to have been constructed by the esteemed Fox family from Falmouth. In later years, it became home to Sir Frederick Martin Williams, Member of Parliament for Truro from 1865-1878. Sir Williams was not only associated with significant local industries such as the Perran Iron Foundry but also held prestigious positions like being the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons in Cornwall. Subsequent owners included J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris who resided there until 1939 when World War II broke out. During this time, Goonvrea House served as accommodation for U. S troops before transforming into a renowned hotel owned by Tony and Joyce Webb. Sadly, tragedy struck in 1982 when a devastating fire ravaged the historic hotel. However, by the early 1990s new houses were built on site while preserving the remaining stable block which has since been converted into residential properties. The photographer responsible for capturing this timeless image is Arthur William Jordan - his lens immortalizing an exquisite piece of Cornish history for future generations to appreciate at Royal Cornwall Museum.
