EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting era of the 1890s in Porthallow, Cornwall. The focal point is The Five Pilchards Inn, a charming establishment that exudes warmth and character. Its signage proudly announces S. J. Southey as the licensed provider of horse and trap rentals, as well as boats for leisurely or fishing pursuits. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness a delightful scene unfolding before our eyes. Seated confidently in the horse-drawn trap is Samuel Southey himself, while his wife Mrs Agnes Southey stands gracefully at the railings with their young son Joe by her side. A sense of familial bliss emanates from their expressions. Adding to this picturesque tableau is Amelia Tremills, an adopted daughter who lovingly holds onto a donkey nearby. Little did anyone know that she would later marry Joe Jewell, and their own son - also named Joe Jewell - would continue residing in Porthallow even decades later in 1982. The identity of the woman dressed elegantly in white remains shrouded in mystery; perhaps she was a passerby drawn to capture this momentous occasion outside The Five Pilchards Inn. Samuel John Govier's skilled lens perfectly captures not only the essence of this beloved inn but also showcases his close relationship with the Southey family through his intimate portrayal of them. This beautiful photograph serves as a testament to both personal connections and historical significance within Cornwall's rich tape
