Charles Mannell and George Penrose admiring the view at Chapel Rock, Trenowth (near Grampound Road) in the parish of Probus, Cornwall. 17th June 1904

This image is mentioned in the Royal Institution of Cornwalls (RIC) Newsletter dated 20th October 1996 " Additions to the photographic collection - one of interest to the RIC taken at Chapel Rock, Trenowth on 17 June 1904. Standing is a Mr Charles Mannell, but seated is George Penrose, then in his fourth year as Curator at our museum. The RICs excursion on 18 August 1903 had been to the area where Sir Robert Harvey, President 1901-03, had recently built a bungalow. It is likely that Penrose returned to examine the Iron Age camps and three chapels or oratories in the vicinity, one of them having stood at Chapel Rock". Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: In this photo print, captured on the 17th of June in 1904, we witness a moment frozen in time at Chapel Rock, Trenowth, near Grampound Road in the parish of Probus, Cornwall. The image showcases two gentlemen engrossed by the breathtaking view before them. Standing tall is Mr. Charles Mannell, his gaze fixed upon the picturesque landscape that stretches out as far as the eye can see. Seated beside him is George Penrose, who at that time was serving his fourth year as Curator at our beloved Royal Cornwall Museum. This remarkable photograph holds historical significance and has been mentioned in the Royal Institution of Cornwall's Newsletter dated 20th October 1996. It highlights an addition to their esteemed photographic collection - one that piqued great interest among its members due to its connection with Chapel Rock and Trenowth. The RIC's previous excursion to this area had taken place on August 18th, 1903 when they visited Sir Robert Harvey's newly built bungalow nearby. It is believed that George Penrose returned to explore further and examine Iron Age camps along with three chapels or oratories situated close by - one of which once stood proudly atop Chapel Rock. Although the identity of the photographer remains unknown, this evocative image serves as a testament to both natural beauty and historical exploration within Cornwall's rich heritage.
