EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in history - the DCLI recruiting march at Caerhays Castle on 13th July 1915. As the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry soldiers make their way through the grand arch at Caerhays Lodge, they are led by a resounding brass band, filling the air with patriotic melodies. Caerhays Castle, a magnificent Grade I listed building designed by renowned architect John Nash for the Trevanion family in the early 1800s, stands proudly in the background. Situated just half a mile south of St Michael Caerhays village, this semi-castellated manor house is currently home to the Williams family and boasts stunning gardens that showcase an impressive collection of magnolias - unrivaled throughout all of Britain. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness these brave British soldiers dressed smartly in their uniforms as they march forward towards duty and honor. The wind gently rustles their attire while adding life to each note played by dedicated musicians holding various musical instruments. As we reflect upon this poignant image from World War I, it serves as a reminder not only of sacrifice but also of unity and resilience. This historic event took place on a Thursday over a century ago but continues to resonate today. Let us remember those who fought bravely for our freedom and pay homage to them through photographs like this one preserved at Royal Cornwall Museum.
