River Street, Truro, Cornwall. Around 1905

View down River Street showing the Truro Savings Bank and Baptist Chapel, later to become the Royal Cornwall Museum. The architect of both buildings was Philip Sambell (1798-1874). The Savings Bank was built in 1847 and closed in 1894. The building then became Hendersons School of Mining in 1897. The School of Mining closed in 1907 and the Royal Institution of Cornwall purchased the building in 1908 to house their growing collections. The interior of the building underwent extensive alterations, including the demolition of the rear part to build the main gallery and a west wing was added. Truro Baptist Chapel was built in 1850. The chapel was purchased by the RIC in 1985 as an extension to the museum. Extensive refurbishment and additions followed, including the link between the two buildings. An upper floor was added to the Baptist Chapel creating the Treffry gallery. Photographer: Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the charm and history of River Street in Truro, Cornwall, around 1905. The focal point of the image is the impressive Truro Savings Bank and Baptist Chapel buildings, both designed by renowned architect Philip Sambell. Built in 1847, the Savings Bank served its purpose until 1894 when it transformed into Hendersons School of Mining. However, by 1907, the school closed its doors and made way for a new chapter as the Royal Institution of Cornwall acquired the building in 1908 to house their expanding collections. The transformation didn't stop there; extensive alterations were made to accommodate this newfound purpose. The rear part was demolished to create a main gallery space while a west wing was added. Meanwhile, just next door stood Truro Baptist Chapel which had been constructed in 1850. In an effort to expand further, the RIC purchased this chapel in 1985 and embarked on extensive refurbishment and additions that included linking it with the former bank building. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, we can also observe elements that bring life to River Street - children playing nearby wearing hats under a clear Cornish sky while a horse-drawn cart passes through bustling with activity. This photograph taken by Arthur Philp allows us to appreciate not only architectural heritage but also glimpses into everyday life during that era.
