EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1870 in Truro, Cornwall. The image showcases a group of distinguished individuals who were part of the Truro Borough Police force at that time. Standing tall and proud, from left to right, we see Sergeant Roberts, Constable Coad (collar number 1), Constable Collet (collar number 4), Constable Scown (collar number 2), and Constable Bettinson. Their crisp uniforms speak volumes about their commitment to maintaining law and order within the city. Seated in front is Superintendent Woodcock, the senior officer overseeing this dedicated team. His presence exudes authority as he gazes confidently into the camera lens. It's fascinating to note that just seven years after this photograph was taken, Truro would be granted city status in 1877, leading to a transformation for the local police force from Truro Borough Police to Truro City Police. The historical significance of this image extends beyond its subjects; it also sheds light on how policing has evolved over time. In 1921, following further changes within Cornwall County Constabulary, this force merged with them before eventually becoming Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in 1967. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum today, this remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into an era when these brave men upheld justice on the streets of Truro - forever capturing their legacy as pillars of security within our beloved city.
