EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to Truro, Cornwall, around the year 1900. The image showcases a group of proud Truro City Police officers standing on the roof of City Hall in Boscawen Street. Led by Chief Constable Angel, formerly Superintendent Angel, these men were responsible for maintaining law and order in this newly granted city. The photograph captures the essence of an era long gone, with each officer donning their impeccable uniforms complete with helmets and top hats. Their stern expressions reflect their commitment to upholding justice within the community they serve. In the center stands Bill Odgers, known as the Town Crier, adding a touch of character to this historic scene. His presence symbolizes not only his role as a public announcer but also his connection between law enforcement and the townspeople. Truro's transformation into a city in 1877 brought about changes within its police force as well. Formerly known as Truro Borough Police, it was renamed Truro City Police to align with its new status. While we may never know who precisely captured this remarkable moment frozen in time due to an unknown photographer, this print serves as a testament to both Cornwall's rich history and the dedicated individuals who upheld peace within its streets over a century ago.
