There is still a hard gale blowing as can be perceived by the full sails and the fact that the crowd on the beach are sheltered from the wind by the hull of the vessel. She was wrecked on Lelant Sands, St Ives on 16th Oct 1886. At 204 tons, the Albert Wilhelm was built by Drossel of Zingst in 1856 and registered in Barth, Germany. The image transports us back to October 16th, 1886, when this majestic vessel met its untimely demise amidst a raging storm. Despite being stranded high and dry on the sands, the ship's towering masts still proudly display full sails against the backdrop of an unforgiving gale. In awe-inspiring numbers, nearly a hundred men and boys gather around or climb aboard the wrecked vessel. Their presence not only showcases their curiosity but also serves as a testament to human resilience and our fascination with maritime disasters. The scene is further enhanced by observing how these spectators find shelter from the relentless wind behind the hull of the ill-fated Albert Wilhelm.
