Wreck of the barque Andromeda, Killygerran Head, near Portscatho, Gerrans, Cornwall. 12th February 1915

Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of the wreck of the barque Andromeda, which met its tragic fate on Killygerran Head near Portscatho, Gerrans, Cornwall on February 12th, 1915. The image is a glass lantern slide from a lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" presented by Major Arthur William Gill in approximately 1925. Major Gill was an esteemed Cornishman and amateur photographer who gained recognition throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What sets Major Gill's work apart is his unique artistic touch. Using ordinary cameras to capture these quarter plate slides with remarkable detail, he then meticulously hand-painted them in vibrant colors that truly bring each scene to life. This particular photograph showcases his talent as it portrays both the desolation and allure of this shipwreck against the rugged Cornish coastline. It is important to note that this caption does not mention any commercial use associated with this print but rather focuses on highlighting Major Arthur William Gill's contribution as an accomplished photographer capturing historic moments in stunning color.
