This black and white lithograph, titled "1837 Extinct prehistoric animals Dorset" takes us back to a time when the world looked vastly different. Featured in the American Children's book "Wonders of Earth Sea and Sky" by Peter Parlay (a pseudonym for Samuel Goodrich), this print showcases an early fossil reconstruction of the incredible creatures that once roamed where Dorsetshire now stands. The artist, Paul D. Stewart, skillfully captures the essence of this ancient era through his meticulous restoration illustration. The monochrome tones add a sense of mystery and intrigue to the scene, transporting viewers to a time long gone. Amongst these extinct wonders are iconic Jurassic creatures such as plesiosaurs, pterodactyls, and ichthyosaurs. These magnificent beings were brought to life through scientific discoveries made by notable figures like William Buckland and William Conybeare. Interestingly, the accompanying text acknowledges Miss Anning's invaluable contribution to our understanding of these prehistoric animals. Spending countless hours collecting fossils from the cliffs near Lyme Regis, she has become an authority on these long-extinct species. The author emphasizes that no visit to Lyme Regis should be complete without exploring her remarkable collection. Paul D. Stewart's evocative artwork not only serves as a visual feast but also pays homage to both Mary Anning's dedication and the pioneering efforts made in early fossil reconstruction. This print is truly a testament to humanity's endless curiosity about our planet's
