1863 Huxley Mans Place in Nature desktop

Desktop including human skull in a glass dome and a first edition of Huxleys 1863 " Evidence as to Mans Place in Nature". The books famous frontis showing a skeleton series from ape to man is reflected in the glass. This US Appleton edition was the first to be published because of delays in the UK by Williams and Norgate publishers. Huxleys was the first book to focus on the issue that Darwin had consciously omitted from his 1859 Origin of Species - the question of human evolution. Huxley was not afraid of controversy, but by the time his book was written there was already some general acceptance for the thesis that man evolved from apes. Huxley had also lectured on much of this material before. In the addendum Huxley presented details of his acrimonious disagreement with Richard Owen over the structural uniqueness of the human brain. Huxleys viewpoint was proved to be correct. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © This image is Paul D. Stewart 2009. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a remarkable desktop arrangement that delves into the fascinating world of human evolution. At its center, a human skull enclosed in a glass dome commands attention, symbolizing our own mortality and connection to the past. The reflection on the glass reveals Huxley's groundbreaking 1863 book, "Evidence as to Mans Place in Nature" with its iconic frontispiece depicting the evolutionary series from ape to man. This particular edition holds historical significance as it was published in the United States due to delays faced by UK publishers. Huxley courageously tackled the controversial topic of human evolution that Darwin had intentionally omitted from his seminal work, "Origin of Species". By this time, society had begun accepting the concept that humans evolved from apes; however, Huxley's book provided comprehensive evidence and further solidified this understanding. Notably, an addendum within Huxley's work sheds light on his heated disagreement with Richard Owen regarding the unique structure of the human brain. Time has proven Huxley's viewpoint correct, adding another layer of importance to this thought-provoking composition. Photographer Paul D. Stewart skillfully captures both scientific curiosity and aesthetic appeal through this image. It serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's ever-evolving journey and our relentless pursuit for knowledge about our origins.
