19th century microscope
Engraving of the Powell & Lealand No.1 single lens microscope built around the mid nineteenth century. It was considered one of the best microscopes ever made & was in continuous production, with modifications, until the twentieth century. It was an all brass construction set on a tripod base with a centrable mechanical stage for the specimen (right). The microscope is here set up to make measurements through a micrometre eyepiece, which has its own support (pillar at extreme left) to keep it steady & aid accurate measurement. The engraving is from The Microscope & its revelationsins 7th edition 1891, by W.B. Carpenter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the remarkable craftsmanship of the Powell & Lealand No. 1 single lens microscope, a true marvel of 19th-century technology. Built around the mid-nineteenth century, this microscope was revered as one of the finest ever made and remained in production until the twentieth century. Constructed entirely from brass, this exquisite instrument stands proudly on a tripod base, exuding elegance and precision. Its centrable mechanical stage allows for meticulous examination of specimens, ensuring accurate observations and measurements. In this particular setup captured by the engraving, we witness the microscope being used to make measurements through a micrometre eyepiece. To ensure stability and enhance precise measurement capabilities, a separate support pillar is provided for the eyepiece. The engraving itself is sourced from "The Microscope & its Revelations" authored by W. B. Carpenter in its seventh edition published in 1891. It serves as both an educational tool and a testament to scientific progress during that era. As we gaze upon this historical artifact with awe and admiration, it reminds us of how far microscopy has advanced since then while also paying homage to those early pioneers who paved the way for our modern understanding of science and discovery.
