5f electron orbitals, general set
5f electron orbitals, general set, computer model. An electron orbital is a region around an atomic nucleus (not seen) in which one or a pair of electrons is most likely to exist. The 5f orbitals are unusual in that there are two ways to represent the orbital shapes. In the general set, the bottom two orbitals are eight-lobed. The two above them have six lobes lying in a plane. The two above them are similarly planar, but the lobes on one axis are flattened. The upper orbital comprises a lobe and an equatorial cone. The cubic set is shown in image A152/150. The 5f orbitals are partially filled in the Actinide metals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and fascinating world of 5f electron orbitals. In this computer model, we are given a glimpse into the mysterious realm surrounding an atomic nucleus where electrons reside. The 5f orbitals possess a unique characteristic - they can be represented in two different ways. In the general set depicted here, we observe six distinct orbital shapes. The bottom two exhibit eight-lobed structures, while the next pair above them feature six lobes lying in a single plane. Moving further up, we encounter another planar arrangement with flattened lobes along one axis. Finally, at the topmost position, there is an orbital composed of both a lobe and an equatorial cone. The complexity and diversity of these electron orbitals highlight their significance in understanding quantum mechanics and physics on a fundamental level. It is worth noting that this particular image represents only one configuration known as the general set; another representation called the cubic set exists as well. As we delve deeper into exploring these mesmerizing patterns and arrangements within atoms, it becomes evident how crucial electron orbitals are to our comprehension of chemistry and atomic behavior. This stunning illustration serves as a testament to human ingenuity in visualizing complex scientific concepts through computer artwork.
