Abram Hewitt, US industrialist

Abram Stevens Hewitt (1822-1903), US industrialist and politician. Hewitt studied at Columbia College in New York, before becoming a lawyer. In 1845, jointly with the Cooper family, he founded the Trenton Iron Company, and helped to build and run the Cooper Union college (founded 1859). He later entered politics as a Democrat, being elected from New York to the US House of Representatives (1875 to 1879 and 1881 to 1886). He was also elected mayor of New York City for a single term (1887 to 1888). This photograph, which dates from the 1870s, is part of a collection of photographs from the Brady-Handy studio
