Alzheimers disease brain cell, TEM

Alzheimers disease brain cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a neurofibrillary tangle in a nerve cell from the brain of a patient with Alzheimers disease. The tangle (dark blue) lies in the cytoplasm (green) of the cell body, adjacent to the nucleus (turquoise). It consists of abnormal aggregates of the protein tau, which in the healthy cell stabilises microtubules in the cytoplasm. It is not known precisely how the tangles are formed, nor their impact on the neurons function, but they are seen in a range of neural disorders including Alzheimers disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), some forms of Parkinsons disease, and Supranuclear Palsy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate details of an Alzheimer's disease brain cell. Through a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we are granted a glimpse into the complex world within our neural system. The image reveals a neurofibrillary tangle, depicted in dark blue, nestled within the cytoplasm of a nerve cell. Adjacent to it lies the nucleus, portrayed in turquoise. These tangles consist of abnormal aggregates of tau protein, which typically aids in stabilizing microtubules within healthy cells' cytoplasm. However, their formation and impact on neuronal function remain shrouded in mystery. Neurologists have observed these tangles not only in Alzheimer's disease but also in other neural disorders like Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), certain forms of Parkinson's disease, and Supranuclear Palsy. As we delve deeper into understanding neurological conditions that afflict us with age or genetic predisposition, this image serves as a reminder of the complexity inherent within our brains. It emphasizes the importance of ongoing research and medical advancements aimed at unraveling these mysteries to develop effective treatments for those affected by such diseases. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable visual resources that bridge scientific knowledge with artistic beauty. This photograph is yet another testament to their commitment to capturing and sharing images that inspire curiosity while shedding light on various aspects of human health and well-being.
