American bittern C013 / 9914

American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) in saltmarsh grasses. Its head is visible at centre left. American bitterns are water birds which live in vegetation at the sides of lakes and slow moving rivers throughout North America. They eat small fish and insects. They are well camouflaged, and when threatened, they stay perfectly still with their bills parallel to the reed stalks, and become practically invisible. They are famous for their booming calls, which the males perform during the spring. This loud, resonant sound is used to attract females and to indicate territories to other males. Photographed on Long Island, New York State, USA. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © BOB GIBBONS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
