Ammonite fossil, Hudsonoceras proetum
Ammonite fossil. Fossilised shell of the ammonite Hudsonoceras proetum. This is a Goniatite fossil (order: Goniatitida), one of the primitive ammonoids which are used as zone fossils in Devonian and Carboniferous strata (dating from 395-345 & 345-280 million years ago respectively). Ammonites were marine molluscs with a coiled shell and distinct head and mouth region surrounded by tentacles. The last ammonites became extinct in the Upper Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago. This specimen of Hudsonoceras proetum is 1.6 centimetres across, and was found in Ireland

Ammonite Fossil Fossil Invertebrate Fossils Goniatite Palaeontology
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of an Ammonite fossil, specifically the Hudsonoceras proetum species. Preserved in time, this fossilized shell provides a glimpse into Earth's ancient history. Belonging to the order Goniatitida, these primitive ammonoids serve as essential zone fossils for dating Devonian and Carboniferous strata, which existed approximately 395-280 million years ago. Ammonites were remarkable marine molluscs characterized by their coiled shells and distinctive head region surrounded by tentacles. They thrived in prehistoric oceans until meeting their demise during the Upper Cretaceous Period around 65 million years ago when they became extinct. Measuring just 1.6 centimeters across, this particular specimen of Hudsonoceras proetum was discovered in Ireland. Its intricate details and delicate structure are testaments to the incredible preservation that allows us to study these ancient creatures today. As we delve into paleontology and explore our planet's rich past, fossils like this Ammonite provide invaluable insights into evolution and life on Earth millions of years ago. This photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of our deep connection with nature's wonders and fuels our curiosity about what other secrets lie hidden beneath layers of time.
