Galapagos land iguana

Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus). This lizard is endemic to the Galapagos Islands, inhabiting the drier areas. Cacti are its main food source and also provide it with the majority of its water intake. In the morning it basks in the Sun to raise its body temperature, but generally prefers shady areas during the hotter parts of the day. It sleeps in a burrow, which helps to conserve its body heat. The land iguana used to exist in vast numbers on the islands, but the arrival of humans led to a severe reduction in its numbers. Photographed on South Plaza Island, Galapagos Islands

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Galapagos land iguana, a remarkable reptile that is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. With its unique appearance and fascinating behavior, this lizard has become an icon of these enchanting islands. The Galapagos land iguana thrives in the arid regions of the islands, relying on cacti as its primary source of food and water. It cleverly utilizes the morning sun to warm up its body temperature before seeking shade during the scorching midday heat. When night falls, it retreats into a burrow to conserve its precious body heat. Once abundant in numbers across these pristine islands, human presence has sadly led to a drastic decline in their population. This photograph was taken on South Plaza Island, one of many locations where these incredible creatures can still be found. Every detail captured in this image highlights not only the beauty but also the importance of preserving our planet's diverse wildlife. From its intricate scales and distinctive head shape to its solitary stance atop a rocky surface, this photograph truly encapsulates both the biological wonders and fragility of life within tropical ecosystems. Science Photo Library brings us yet another awe-inspiring glimpse into nature's marvels with this extraordinary portrayal of a Galapagos land iguana - a testament to their commitment towards showcasing our world's natural treasures through photography.
