Newborn seahorse, SEM

Newborn seahorse. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a young seahorse (Hippocampus sp.). The seahorse is a fish that swims upright using its pectoral fins (upper right) and dorsal fin (lower centre). A young seahorse develops in one of hundreds of eggs that the female deposits in the males pouch. The eggs hatch after 2-6 weeks. A seahorse sucks up tiny shrimps, fish larvae and tiny crustaceans through its tube-like mouth (upper centre). It can moor itself to plants or coral using its prehensile tail (lower left). Seahorses range in length from 2-40 centimetres, inhabiting temperate and tropical seas worldwide. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the delicate beauty of a newborn seahorse, showcasing its intricate features through a colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The young seahorse, belonging to the Hippocampus species, is depicted swimming upright with the aid of its pectoral fins and dorsal fin. The fascinating life cycle of these enchanting creatures is revealed as we learn that a female seahorse deposits hundreds of eggs into the male's pouch. After a period of 2-6 weeks, these eggs hatch, giving birth to adorable miniature versions of their parents. Feeding on tiny shrimps, fish larvae, and crustaceans through its tube-like mouth, this planktonic grazer demonstrates remarkable adaptability in its marine habitat. Its prehensile tail allows it to anchor itself to plants or coral effortlessly. Seahorses can be found in temperate and tropical seas worldwide and vary in size from 2-40 centimeters. This SEM image magnified at x20 showcases every minute detail with astonishing clarity. This mesmerizing photograph not only highlights the natural wonders that exist beneath our oceans but also serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity within our planet's ecosystems. It invites us to marvel at nature's ingenuity and appreciate the intricacies that make each creature unique.
