Antennae galaxies, composite image
Antennae galaxies, composite image. Two galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039) are colliding here. They are 60 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Corvus. This image, which shows an area about 61, 000 light years across, was obtained in a series of observations over several years by NASAs Great Observatories. X-ray data is from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue); optical data is from the Hubble Space Telescope (gold and brown); and infrared data is from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The image was published in August 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Antennae galaxies, a mesmerizing composite image that captures the collision of two galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039. Situated approximately 60 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of Corvus, these colliding galaxies create a stunning display of cosmic chaos. Obtained through a series of observations over several years by NASA's Great Observatories, this image reveals an expansive area spanning about 61,000 light years across. The Chandra X-ray Observatory contributes its data in blue hues, while the Hubble Space Telescope adds golden and brown tones with its optical data. Additionally, infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope completes this extraordinary montage. Published in August 2010, this composite image offers a glimpse into the intricate dance between celestial bodies within our vast universe. It highlights not only the gravitational interaction between these merging galaxies but also demonstrates how different observatories can collaborate to provide us with comprehensive insights into astrophysical phenomena. With its advanced CCD imaging spectrometer and cutting-edge technology, Chandra X-ray Observatory Center presents us with yet another awe-inspiring visual masterpiece that sparks curiosity and wonder about our place in space.
