Artists impression of the launch of an Ariane 5

Ariane 5. Artists impression of an Ariane 5 rocket high over the Earth during launch. The two booster rockets have just been jettisoned from the main body. The boosters are jettisoned from the main body 129 seconds after takeoff when their fuel supply becomes exhausted. They fall 55 kilometres to Earth and are recovered for re-use. The boosters each use about 237 tonnes of solid propellant whilst the Vulcain motor in the main body burns liquid fuel. The Ariane 5 design was developed and built in Europe. It is used mainly for satellite launches, although the rocket is capable of carrying a variety of other spacecraft for space exploration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring launch of an Ariane 5 rocket, beautifully captured by the artist's impression. Against the backdrop of our magnificent Earth, this European-built spacecraft soars high into the heavens, leaving a trail of wonder in its wake. In this particular moment frozen in time, we witness a crucial stage of the launch as the two booster rockets are gracefully jettisoned from the main body. Having served their purpose for 129 seconds after takeoff and expended their fuel supply, these boosters begin their descent back to Earth. Falling an astonishing 55 kilometers before reaching our planet's surface, they will later be recovered for future reuse – a testament to sustainable space exploration. The Ariane 5 rocket is truly remarkable in its design and capabilities. With each booster utilizing around 237 tonnes of solid propellant and powered by liquid fuel within its main body Vulcain motor, it stands as a symbol of European ingenuity and expertise. While primarily used for satellite launches, this versatile launcher has also proven itself capable of carrying various other spacecraft on missions dedicated to exploring outer space. As we gaze upon this extraordinary artwork from Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge but also our ability to reach new heights through collaboration and innovation in space exploration.
