Artists impression of Mars Global Surveyor
Mars Global Surveyor. Artists impression of the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft in orbit around the red planet. After launch in November 1996, MGS will cruise on a direct trajectory to Mars, then enter a highly elliptical orbit. It will then use aerobraking (dipping into the upper atmosphere on each pass) to slow down and to circularise the orbit. By March 1998 it will start a two-year mapping and observation mission. One of its cameras will resolve details just 3 metres across. MGS will perform five of the seven tasks assigned to the defunct Mars Observer mission, and will act as a radio relay for Russian and US landers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's impression of the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft gracefully orbiting the enigmatic red planet. Launched in November 1996, MGS embarked on a direct trajectory towards Mars before settling into a highly elliptical orbit. Employing a unique technique called aerobraking, it skillfully dipped into the upper atmosphere during each pass to decelerate and achieve a circularized orbit. By March 1998, this remarkable spacecraft commenced its ambitious two-year mapping and observation mission. Equipped with cutting-edge cameras capable of resolving details as small as 3 meters across, MGS promised to unveil unprecedented insights about our neighboring world. Notably, MGS assumed five out of seven tasks originally assigned to the ill-fated Mars Observer mission while also serving as a vital radio relay for both Russian and US landers exploring Martian terrain. This awe-inspiring artwork not only captures humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge but also symbolizes our unyielding spirit of exploration. It represents mankind's unwavering curiosity about distant worlds beyond our own and serves as a testament to human ingenuity in conquering seemingly insurmountable challenges posed by space travel. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image, we are reminded that through scientific endeavor and technological advancements like those embodied by the Mars Global Surveyor, humankind continues to push boundaries and unravel the mysteries that lie within our vast universe.
