Artwork of the local neighbourhood of the Sun

The Local Bubble. Map of a small portion of our Milky Way galaxy centred on the Sun (one of the yellow stars at centre). The Suns neighbourhood is surrounded by a loop of gas (orange), the Local Bubble, some 500 light years in diameter. It was formed either by the blast wave of a supernova explosion or by the stellar winds of many young stars. Red circles with yellow cores are red giant stars, blue circles with white cores are blue giants. A nearby gas loop (out of picture at top right) is compressing the Local Bubble and pushing streamers of gas (upper centre) towards the Sun. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the locat- ion of 1500 stars, nebulae and other objects

Bubble Cosmology Galactic Galaxy Local Milky Way

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the local neighbourhood of our Sun within the vast expanse of the Milky Way galaxy. The print depicts a small portion of our galactic home, with the Sun represented as one of the yellow stars at its center. Surrounding this celestial hub is a mesmerizing loop of vibrant orange gas known as the Local Bubble, spanning an impressive 500 light years in diameter. The origins of this cosmic phenomenon remain shrouded in mystery, believed to have been formed either by a powerful supernova explosion or by the collective stellar winds emanating from numerous young stars. The intricate details captured in this artwork reveal red giant stars depicted as red circles with yellow cores and blue giants portrayed as blue circles with white cores. Intriguingly, just beyond the frame lies another gas loop that is compressing and exerting pressure on the Local Bubble. This compression causes streamers of gas to be pushed towards our Sun from upper center stage. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map upon which this artwork is based was meticulously crafted using data from 1500 stars, nebulae, and other celestial objects. Immerse yourself in this stunning visual representation that seamlessly blends science and artistry together. Explore our sun's region within the Milky Way galaxy and marvel at its intricacies while contemplating humanity's place amidst such grandeur.
