Artwork of a section through sunburnt skin

Sunburnt skin. Artwork of a section through the epidermis (outer) layer of sunburnt skin. Sunburn is inflammation of the skin caused by overexposure to the sun. At upper frame dead epidermal cells (thin, squamous with no nucleus) that have been destroyed by ultraviolet light in the suns rays are sloughing off. Below, further destruction of the skins cells is seen in the pink, irregular shapes of dead cell debris. The basal cell layer of the epidermis is at lower centre (wave-like across the frame). Some damage can also be seen to cells of this layer. At bottom frame are red (oxygenated) and blue (deoxygenated) capillaries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases a section through sunburnt skin, offering a fascinating glimpse into the effects of overexposure to the sun. The outer layer of the epidermis, depicted in this print, reveals the aftermath of inflammation caused by harmful ultraviolet rays. At the top frame, we witness thin and squamous dead epidermal cells that have been destroyed by intense sunlight, gradually shedding off. Moving below, we observe further destruction manifested as pink and irregular shapes representing dead cell debris. The central focus lies on the basal cell layer of the epidermis, which appears wave-like across the frame. This crucial layer also bears signs of damage inflicted by excessive exposure to UV radiation. Finally, at the bottom frame, an intricate network of red (oxygenated) and blue (deoxygenated) capillaries is visible—a testament to both our body's response to injury and its attempt to heal itself. This thought-provoking artwork not only highlights a common condition like sunburn but also serves as a reminder of how delicate our skin can be when faced with environmental challenges. It merges elements from art and medicine seamlessly while providing valuable insights into dermatological health care practices. Created by Science Photo Library for educational purposes rather than commercial use, this print offers an intriguing blend of scientific accuracy and artistic expression that will captivate viewers interested in both science and aesthetics alike.
