Astronaut chess game on the ISS C016 / 4205
Astronaut chess game on the ISS. NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff (born 1962) playing a game of chess in the Harmony node of the International Space Station (ISS). Chamitoff was a flight engineer for part of Expedition 17 and part of Expedition 18, and was on the ISS from June to November 2008. This game, using velcro to prevent loss of the pieces, was played over several weeks during Expedition 17. Black was played in turn by the six ground control centres (two in the USA, two in Europe, one in Russia, and one in Japan). Chamitoff (White) is awaiting Blacks 18th move from the ATV-CC. Chamitoff won on move 30. Photographed on 19 July 2008

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a truly out-of-this-world chess game taking place on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff engages in a strategic battle of wits as he plays chess in the Harmony node of the ISS. Floating effortlessly in the weightless environment, Chamitoff showcases his multitasking skills by combining his passion for board games with his responsibilities as a flight engineer during Expedition 17 and 18. This particular game was no ordinary match; it spanned several weeks and involved ground control centers from six different countries. Using velcro to secure the pieces and prevent any loss due to microgravity, Chamitoff eagerly awaited each move made by one of the ground control centers located across Europe, Russia, Japan, and the United States. As an amateur chess player himself, Chamitoff demonstrated not only his expertise in spaceflight but also his analytical thinking abilities. With Earth floating serenely below him through one of Harmony's windows, he calculated every move meticulously until finally emerging victorious on move 30. This photograph captures not just a momentary recreational activity but also highlights how technology has advanced to enable cultural connections even beyond our planet's boundaries. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our unyielding desire to explore new frontiers while still embracing elements of our terrestrial society such as board games that have been enjoyed for centuries.
