Astronaut Duke next to Plum Crater, Apollo 16

Exploring the Moon: astronaut Duke stands next to Crater Plum during the first excursion of the Apollo 16 mission. Duke is seen holding a bore sampling implement, used to take vertical profile samples of the lunar soil. On the far side of the 30 metre wide crater is the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). Astronauts Duke and Young landed in the Descartes region of the Moon on 21 April 1972. During their 71 hour visit, they made three excursions on the surface totalling 20 hours 14 minutes, covering 26 kilometres in the LRV. After blasting off from the Moon, they rejoined astronaut Mattingly in the Command and Service Module, returning to Earth on 27 April 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when Astronaut Duke embarked on his first excursion during the Apollo 16 mission. Standing next to Crater Plum, he exudes a sense of determination and curiosity as he holds a bore sampling implement in his gloved hand. This tool was crucial for extracting vertical profile samples of the lunar soil, allowing scientists back on Earth to unravel the mysteries hidden beneath its surface. In the background, we catch a glimpse of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), stationed on the far side of this impressive 30-meter-wide crater. The LRV served as their trusty companion throughout their exploration journey, enabling them to cover an astonishing distance of 26 kilometers over three excursions spanning more than 20 hours. Astronauts Duke and Young made history when they touched down in Descartes region on April 21st, 1972. Their remarkable visit lasted for a total of 71 hours before they bid farewell to our celestial neighbor. After reuniting with astronaut Mattingly aboard the Command and Service Module, they embarked on their return journey home, safely landing back on Earth on April 27th. This breathtaking image is not just a testament to human ingenuity but also serves as a reminder that there are no limits when it comes to exploring new frontiers beyond our planet's boundaries. It stands as an enduring symbol of mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and adventure in space exploration.
