Astronaut exercising on the ISS C016 / 4207

Astronaut exercising on the ISS. NASA astronaut Sunita Williams (born 1965) exercising in a bungee harness on the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT) in the Tranquility node of the International Space Station (ISS). Astronauts in space must follow intensive daily exercise regimes to reduce the muscle atrophy and loss of bone tissue that occurs in free fall. Williams was on the ISS from July to November 2012, as flight engineer for Expedition 32 and then commander of Expedition 33. In September 2012, she completed the first triathlon in space. Photographed on 4 August 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, born in 1965, as she diligently exercises on the International Space Station (ISS). Floating weightlessly in the Tranquility node of the ISS, Williams is seen using a bungee harness on the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT). In order to combat muscle atrophy and bone tissue loss caused by free fall conditions, astronauts like Williams must adhere to rigorous daily exercise regimes while in space. During her time aboard the ISS from July to November 2012, Williams served as both flight engineer for Expedition 32 and commander of Expedition 33. Notably, she achieved a groundbreaking feat by completing the first triathlon ever conducted in space during September of that year. This photograph was taken on August 4th, 2012. The image showcases not only the physical demands placed upon astronauts but also highlights their unwavering dedication to maintaining their physiological well-being amidst challenging circumstances. Equipped with a white running suit and secured by a bungee harness, Williams demonstrates her commitment to preventing muscle wastage and bone density decline while orbiting Earth. This remarkable snapshot serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination as we explore new frontiers beyond our planet's boundaries. It symbolizes our relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding within the realm of space exploration.
