Astronomy and the infrared spectrum

Astronomy and the infrared (IR) spectrum. The IR part of the electromagnetic spectrum runs from far red (lower left) through near IR, mid-IR, far IR & submillimetre wavelengths (1-1000 micrometres). Much of the IR spectrum is absorbed by the atmosphere, so detectors in satellites and space observatories are used. Some IR waves can be detected on mountains and in aircraft. Detectors in the mid-IR range can be affected by the heat glow emissions (red band) of their surroundings. Sources of IR include new stars (far left), starburst galaxies (upper left), cool interstellar clouds (upper right) and the background radiation left over from the Big bang (far right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating world of astronomy and the infrared spectrum. Spanning from far red to submillimeter wavelengths, the infrared (IR) part of the electromagnetic spectrum reveals a hidden realm that is not visible to our naked eyes. However, much of this IR radiation is absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, necessitating the use of detectors in satellites and space observatories for comprehensive exploration. Interestingly, some IR waves can still be detected on mountains and in aircraft, providing alternative platforms for observation. Nevertheless, detectors operating in the mid-IR range face challenges due to heat glow emissions from their surroundings. The image beautifully captures various sources of infrared radiation found throughout our universe. From new stars emerging on one end to starburst galaxies shining brightly on another, cool interstellar clouds drifting through space occupy a prominent spot as well. Lastly, we witness remnants of background radiation left over from the Big Bang itself. This stunning artwork not only highlights astrophysics but also emphasizes how technology plays a crucial role in unraveling cosmic mysteries. With Science Photo Library's expertise in capturing scientific wonders like these, it serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit to understand our place within this vast cosmos.
