Avian flu virus

Avian flu virus, computer artwork. A virus is a tiny pathogenic particle comprising genetic material enclosed in a protein coat. The coat contains surface proteins (spikes). Flu viruses have two types of surface protein, called haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). These exist in several subtypes, only some of which are pathogenic in humans. The current bird flu that is endemic in birds is H5N1. The surface proteins are essential for the life cycle of the virus. Haemagglutinin allows the virus to bind to and enter a host cell, where the virus uses the cells machinery to create more copies of the virus. Neuraminidase allows the new virus particles to exit the cell, so that they can infect others

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of the Avian flu virus, depicted through stunning computer artwork. The virus, a minuscule pathogenic particle enveloped in a protein coat, is brought to life in this magnified image. The surface proteins on its coat, known as haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), play crucial roles in its life cycle. Haemagglutinin enables the virus to attach itself to and invade host cells, where it hijacks their machinery to replicate itself. Neuraminidase then facilitates the release of newly formed viral particles from the infected cell, allowing them to spread and infect others. The current strain of bird flu that plagues avian populations is H5N1, one among several subtypes of influenza viruses. While only certain subtypes are harmful to humans, understanding their structure and behavior is essential for combating potential epidemics or pandemics. Through this illustration created by Science Photo Library's talented artists, we gain insight into the microscopic world of virology and epidemiology. This mesmerizing artwork serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle between humanity and infectious diseases like avian influenza.
