Aviation monument

Aviation monument commemorating the British Fairey F-3 seaplane that made the first flight across the South Atlantic from Lisbon, Portugal to Brazil, in March-June of 1922. Two Portuguese naval officers (Coutinho and Cabral) flew a total of three F-3 seaplanes during the journey. Fuel limitations and mechanical problems required stops for repairs and fuel at remote Atlantic islands. Out of sight of land, they navigated using a sextant that had been specially designed for airplane use. Their first seaplane, the Lusitania, sank after a rough landing. They completed the journey in the Santa Cruz which replaced the Lusitanias replacement, the Portugal. Photographed in Lisbon, Portugal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Aviation monument in Lisbon, Portugal. Standing tall and proud, this monument commemorates a remarkable feat achieved by the British Fairey F-3 seaplane back in 1922. It was on this very aircraft that two Portuguese naval officers, Coutinho and Cabral, embarked on an extraordinary journey across the South Atlantic from Lisbon to Brazil. The daring expedition faced numerous challenges along the way. Fuel limitations and mechanical issues forced them to make stops at remote Atlantic islands for repairs and refueling. What makes their achievement even more astounding is that they navigated through vast stretches of open ocean using a specially designed sextant for airplane use. The journey wasn't without its setbacks; their first seaplane, named Lusitania, met its demise after a rough landing. However, undeterred by adversity, they pressed on with their replacement plane called Santa Cruz - which had itself replaced Lusitania's original successor, Portugal. This monumental sculpture serves as a tribute not only to these pioneering aviators but also to the advancements made in early twentieth-century aviation technology. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in conquering new frontiers. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured within this photograph print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the immense courage displayed by these Portuguese explorers who pushed boundaries and forever etched their names into the annals of maritime history.
