Bamboo stem, SEM

Bamboo stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a bamboo stem (Phyllostachys sp.). Vascular bundles can be seen (bright yellow) containing xylem (larger openings) and phloem (smaller openings). The xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant and the phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. The pale yellow and brown fibres are woody supportive tissue. Bamboos are tropical and subtropical members of the grass family Gramineae. The stems, known as canes or culms, can reach great heights. They are widely used in construction, as these fibres form very tough structures, but are also flexible. Magnification: x80 when printed at 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a bamboo stem, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals a cross-section of the stem from a tropical or subtropical species known as Phyllostachys. Vibrant yellow hues highlight the presence of vascular bundles within the stem. These bundles play a crucial role in transporting essential substances throughout the plant. The larger openings, representing xylem, serve as conduits for water and mineral nutrients absorbed by the roots. Meanwhile, smaller openings symbolize phloem, responsible for distributing carbohydrates and plant hormones. Surrounding these vital transport systems are pale yellow and brown fibres that form woody supportive tissue. It is this remarkable combination of strength and flexibility that makes bamboo an invaluable resource in construction. With a magnification level of 80 times its actual size when printed at 10 centimetres tall, this SEM image offers viewers an up-close look into the fascinating world of botanical structures. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it serves as a testament to nature's ingenuity and complexity. As part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection on structure, nature, botany, flora, and plants' biological aspects; this photograph provides valuable insights into bamboo's histology while showcasing its unique characteristics without mentioning any commercial use associated with it.
