EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Basin of the North Atlantic Ocean as depicted in an 1854 edition of the first printed bathymetric map. Created by Matthew Fontaine Maury, a renowned US naval officer and oceanographer, this pioneering map provides a fascinating glimpse into the seabed depths of the North Atlantic. The original data for this map was collected during the 1830s, making it a significant historical artifact. The detailed illustration reveals depths up to 4000 fathoms (equivalent to approximately 7.3 kilometers), shedding light on the topography of this vast oceanic basin. A notable feature is the inset showcasing Rockall Bank off Ireland, while at the top lies the Telegraphic Plateau which was later identified as part of the mid-ocean ridge. Published in Maurys Explanations and Sailing Directions to Accompany Wind and Current Charts in 1854, this monochrome map offers valuable insights into early cartography and oceanographic research. It spans across various regions including Europe, North America, Bermuda, Cuba, Haiti, Newfoundland, Florida, and more. The significance of Maury's work cannot be overstated; he served as superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory and played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of oceanography during his time. This print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate both its historical value and its contribution to geographical knowledge about one of Earth's most enigmatic oceans -the North Atlantic
