Belka, Soviet space dog, after the mission
Space animal. Belka, one of the dogs on board the second spacecraft to carry animals into orbit, after the mission. Belka was launched in the Soviet Korabl-Sputnik 2 (also called Sputnik 5) on 19 August 1960. Belka (meaning " squirrel" ) was accompanied by another dog, 40 mice, 2 rats and some plants. The spacecraft orbited for one day, completing 18 revolutions around the Earth. It re- entered the atmosphere and the animals were recovered successfully. Belkas mission helped to pave the way for the first manned spaceflight the following year. Photographed during an " interview" with Radio Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Belka, a Soviet space dog, after her groundbreaking mission. Belka was one of the courageous animals on board the second spacecraft to venture into orbit. Launched on August 19,1960, in the Soviet Korabl-Sputnik 2 (also known as Sputnik 5), she embarked on an extraordinary journey alongside another dog, mice, rats, and plants. For one day, this brave crew orbited our planet for a total of 18 revolutions before re-entering Earth's atmosphere. The successful recovery of these animals marked a significant milestone in space exploration and paved the way for future manned missions. In this particular moment captured by Science Photo Library during an "interview" with Radio Moscow, we see Belka exuding resilience and curiosity. Her eyes reflect both her incredible experience and her unwavering spirit as she became an ambassador for scientific progress. Belka's contribution to space research cannot be understated. She played a vital role in advancing our understanding of living organisms' ability to withstand the challenges posed by outer space conditions. Her courage and sacrifice laid the foundation for subsequent manned spaceflights that would forever change humanity's relationship with the cosmos. As we admire this photograph print from Science Photo Library, let us pay tribute to Belka and all those who have fearlessly ventured beyond our world's boundaries in pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
