Buckyball molecule

Buckyball molecule. Computer artwork of a molecule of buckminsterfullerene (C60), a spherical fullerene and the first fullerene to be discovered (in 1985). It is named after the architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, who popularised geodesic domes of a similar shape. Fullerenes are a structural type (allotrope) of carbon. The molecular model here shows the spherical arrangement of the 60 carbon atoms in rings of pentagons and hexagons. The spherical fullerenes are sometimes referred to as buckyballs. As of 2006, research was being conducted into the use of fullerenes for medical purposes. Fullerenes are also being investigated for their physical and chemical properties

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Buckyball molecule, also known as buckminsterfullerene (C60). Created through computer artwork, this molecular model reveals the spherical arrangement of 60 carbon atoms forming rings of pentagons and hexagons. Named after renowned architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, who popularized geodesic domes with a similar shape, fullerenes are a fascinating structural type of carbon. The spherical fullerenes have earned the affectionate nickname "buckyballs" due to their resemblance to tiny soccer balls. This groundbreaking discovery in 1985 paved the way for extensive research into these macromolecules' physical and chemical properties. Scientists have been exploring potential medical applications for fullerenes since 2006, delving into their promising use in various fields such as nanotechnology and materials science. As we delve deeper into understanding these remarkable molecules, it becomes evident that they hold immense potential for advancements in engineering and technology. Their unique molecular structure has captivated researchers worldwide, leading them to investigate further possibilities beyond commercial use. This awe-inspiring illustration serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge at Science Photo Library. It encapsulates both the organic elegance found within nature's building blocks and humanity's ability to harness its secrets for scientific progress.
