Burning pool of oil beside well in rainforest

Burning pool of crude oil beside Sacha field oil well in the Amazonian rainforest of Ecuador. A large proportion of the rainforest in this area has been handed out to foreign oil companies for development. Beside each well is a pool of oil like this one; oil is dumped into the pool every 6 months when the well is cleaned. This pool has been accidentally set alight by a colonist who was burning a nearby section of the rainforest. The colonists tend to follow the oil company roads into previously-untouched rainforest areas

Environmental Oil Pollution Oil Well Pollution Rain Forest

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the devastating consequences of oil extraction in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The image depicts a burning pool of crude oil beside an oil well in Ecuador's Sacha field, highlighting the alarming environmental destruction caused by foreign oil companies operating in this region. The vast expanse of rainforest surrounding the well has been handed over to these companies for development, resulting in irreversible damage to one of Earth's most precious ecosystems. Every six months, when cleaning the well, excess oil is dumped into pools like this one. However, tragedy struck when a colonist accidentally set fire to this particular pool while burning a nearby section of forest. This photograph serves as a stark reminder that human activities have dire consequences on our environment. The colonists often follow the roads built by these oil companies into previously untouched areas of rainforest, further exacerbating deforestation and endangering countless species that call this habitat home. As we gaze upon this haunting image, it becomes clear that urgent action is needed to protect our planet's fragile ecosystems from such destructive practices. It is crucial for governments and international bodies to prioritize sustainable alternatives and enforce stricter regulations on industries responsible for pollution and environmental degradation. Science Photo Library brings attention to these pressing issues through their thought-provoking visuals, urging us all to take responsibility for safeguarding our natural world before it's too late.
