Calcifediol molecule

Calcifediol molecule. Computer model showing the structure of a molecule of the pre-hormone calcifediol. Atoms are colour-coded (carbon: grey, hydrogen: white, oxygen: red) with the bonds between them shown as sticks. Calcifediol is produced by hydroxylation of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in the liver. It is then converted by an enzyme in the kidneys into calcitriol, a secosteroid hormone and the active form of vitamin D. Because of its close involvement in the metabolism of vitamin D, blood concentration of calcidiol is considered the best indicator of vitamin D status in the body

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a calcifediol molecule, depicted through a computer model. The atoms within the molecule are color-coded to enhance clarity; carbon atoms appear in grey, hydrogen atoms in white, and oxygen atoms in red. The bonds between these atoms are represented as sticks, providing a visual representation of their connectivity. Calcifediol is an essential pre-hormone that plays a crucial role in vitamin D metabolism. It is produced when vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) undergoes hydroxylation in the liver. Subsequently, an enzyme present in the kidneys converts calcifediol into calcitriol – an active form of vitamin D and a secosteroid hormone. The concentration of calcidiol found within our bloodstream serves as an excellent indicator for assessing one's overall vitamin D status. This measurement holds significant importance due to its close involvement with various metabolic processes associated with this vital nutrient. Displayed against a crisp white background, this image beautifully captures the complexity and elegance inherent within biological systems at the molecular level. Its depiction provides valuable insights into both biology and chemistry while highlighting key aspects such as hormonal regulation and molecular structures. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library offers viewers a glimpse into the fascinating world of biochemistry by showcasing the fundamental building blocks that drive numerous physiological functions within our bodies.
